Rainbow Rice sensory play Recipe.

I’ve read about coloured rice for so often and yet never gave it a go myself because I thought it didn’t look all that entertaining… Oh how very wrong was I! He played with the rice for hours and hours – two days in a row!!

It still gets played with now and T loves burying things in the rice and letting it pour through his fingers. You can write and draw in the rice and dye it any colour you like, even rainbow colours if you have the dyes available.

I came across a recipe to dye the rice on http://happyhooligans.ca and modified to our needs by halving the recipe and just using no-frills food bags because we don’t buy zip-lock ones and I couldn’t be bothered to have containers to wash out after this recipe – my dish stack is high enough as it is and we don’t own a dish-washing machine… Sigh.

So here it goes, without further ado, the recipe for coloured rice. You will need:

  1. 100g (or half a cup) of white rice per colour.

  2. 1/2tsp of clear (white) vinegar per colour – you only need to use 1/4 of a tsp but its easier to pour the 1/2.

  3. A few drops (or spaghetti tip if your using paste) of food colouring per colour.

  4. A plastic bag or container to shake the rice in – you can rinse and dry the bag for the different colours then rinse dry and reuse the bag afterwards.

  5. Something to dry the rice on – you could use a dinner plate or put it on a waterproof table cover.

So it’s super simple to do.

  1. Weigh or measure out your rice and put it in to separate bags for each colour.

  2. Add your food colouring to the 2tsps of vinegar and stir.

  3. Put 1/4 of a tsp of the coloured vinegar into the rice.

  4. Leave some air in the bag when you tie it up and then give it a good shake to coat all of the rice.

  5. Empty your coloured rice onto a waterproof surface and leave to dry overnight or for a good few hours in a warm place.

And that’s it! It’s really that simple!! Once your finished you can store it in an airtight container (though ours is just in a bowl in a dry place) and hoover up any that has gone awry.

Thank you for reading and I hope you have as much fun with your Rainbow Rice as we had with ours.
